SOCIETY
OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL September is S.V.P.
Awareness Month - an appropriate time to bring to your attention the work of
the S.V.P. in the Abbey parish. The heart of our Vincentian work involves visiting
the elderly and house- bound, the lonely, single parent families and those in
any sort of need. We share our time
and ourselves with those we visit - making friends and helping in practical ways
- perhaps doing some shopping, the occasional D.I.Y. job or providing transport
for a hospital appointment. Our activities extend beyond home visiting into areas
such as:- Soup Run
(in participation with other Christian groups): Once a month members make soup
and sandwiches sufficient for 100 persons.
We head for a city centre location where homeless or disadvantaged men,
and some women, many with alcohol or drug related problems are awaiting our
arrival. All are hungry. In the winter months we take blankets, gloves and woolly
hats, all of which are in great demand. Transport
to Mass:
Each Sunday members and helpers man the parish minibus and bring to the
10.30am Mass parishioners who otherwise would be unable to come because of age
or infirmity. Social
Events:
We arrange three events a year for those we visit - namely a Summer
outing, usually to the Redemptorist House at Hawkstone, an Autumn Social and a
Christmas Lunch. These functions
are not financed from our Society funds but from special fund-raising by our
members. Outreach:
Through the S.V.P. National Twinnage Programme we are twinned with three S.V.P.
groups, one in the Sudan and two in India.
We support them with our prayers, correspondence and financial aid.
We have participated in special projects such as sponsoring an Indian
student on an engineering course, and helping in the provision of typewriters
for a training school for girls. We
also support the S.V.P. Disaster Fund. The S.V.P’s motto is “Turning Concern into
Action”. We at the Abbey try to
do this through our varied work. We
are supported by your great generosity to our monthly collection, for which we
offer our grateful thanks. Holy
Mass is offered for all your intentions. |
